Cheryl Harris describes whiteness as a form of property, which confers privileges on its holders. As a white person, I realized I had been taught about racism as something White privilege puts others at a disadvantage, but had been taught not to see one of its corollary aspects, white privilege, which puts me at an advantage.
I can swear, or dress in second-hand clothes, or not answer letters, without having people attribute these choices to the bad morals, the poverty, or the illiteracy of my race. For example, the feeling that one belongs within the human circle, as Native Americans say, should not be seen as privilege for a few.

Because of this, academic and societal ideas about race have tended to focus solely on the disadvantages suffered by racial minoritiesoverlooking the advantageous effects that accrue to whites.
What will we do with such knowledge? I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my race widely represented. According to the distinctiveness theory, posited by University of Kentucky professor Ajay Mehra and colleagues, people identify with other people who share similar characteristics which are otherwise rare in their environment; women identify more with women, whites with other whites.
The family wealth so generated is the most important contribution to wealth disparity between black and white Americans. Perhaps most indicative of the power and prevalence of White Privilege is that, though people of Color have been fighting racism since its invention, those who are most associated with White Privilege education tend to be White people: Helms traditional psychological and academic assessment is based on skills that are considered important within white, western, middle-class culture, but which may not be salient or valued within African-American culture.
The "single greatest source of wealth" for white Americans is the growth in value in their owner-occupied homes. Laws and mores concerning race from apartheid and Jim Crow constructions that legally separate different races to social prejudices against interracial relationships or mixed communities serve the purpose of retaining certain advantages and privileges for whites.
Do not get trapped in definitions of privilege and power. We might at least start by distinguishing between positive advantages, which we can work to spread, and negative types of advantage, which unless rejected will always reinforce our present hierarchies.
